PEMF therapy effectiveness in mouse models of breast cancer; Mice were divided into four groups (n = 3 each). Group 1, 2, and 3 were exposed to PEMF therapy (1 Hz, 100 mT) daily for 60, 180, or 360 min, respectively, for 4 weeks, while group 4 did not receive PEMF therapy and was used as control. All mice were monitored for tumor growth by body bioluminescence imaging once every 2 to 4 days for 4 weeks. Then, all the mice were sacrificed and skin, liver, lung, and spleen samples were collected for histopathologic analysis. Mice exposed to PEMFs for 60 and 180 min daily showed a 30% and 70% breast tumor reduction, respectively, at week 4. Mice exposed to PEMF for 360 min daily, showed a suppression of tumor growth at week 4. In summary, this study shows that the time of PEMF exposure is critical to determine its effectiveness. Mice exposed for longer duration (360 min daily for 4 weeks) showed a significant reduction in tumor size, due probably to the inhibition of angiogenesis that may suppress the formation of blood vessels in tumor tissues, reducing the tumor growth.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields have always existed, in fact the Earth is constantly generating one, in basis, we are always exposed to a pulsating field of electromagnetic energy. However, due to the broad spectrum of other Electromagnetic Fields that currently inhabit the air; the effects of the PEMF are lost in so much “Static Electromagnetic energy”. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy can non-invasively treat a variety of pathologies by delivering electric and magnetic fields to tissues via inductive coils. The electromagnetic fields generated by these devices have been found to affect a variety of biological processes and basic science understanding of the underlying mechanisms of action of PEMF treatment has accelerated in the last 10 years. Accumulating clinical evidence supports the use of PEMF therapy in both animals and humans for specific clinical indications including bone healing, wound healing, osteoarthritis and inflammation, and treatment of post-operative pain and edema. While there is some confusion about PEMF as a clinical treatment modality, it is increasingly being prescribed by veterinarians. In an effort to unravel the confusion surrounding PEMF devices, this article reviews important PEMF history, device taxonomy, mechanisms of action, basic science and clinical evidence, and relevant trends in veterinary medicine. The data reviewed underscore the usefulness of PEMF treatment as a safe, non-invasive treatment modality that has the potential to become an important stand-alone or adjunctive treatment modality in veterinary care.
So now I can return to the question I posed at the beginning of this article, “Is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy dangerous?” In short, No. From all the evidence I have seen and read, there seems to be no immediate damage caused by PEMF. If in fact, this is just an artificially recreated version of the Earths own Pulsed Electromagnetic Field, then I can understand why we aren’t being damaged by it; after all we did evolve under its effects.

PEMF Therapy has developed an almost universal reputation for improvement in sleep. People with electrical hypersensitivity often suffer from issues such as: problems falling asleep, early awakening, multiple awakening or long waking hours during the night. PEMF therapy devices have proven to be the most effective in stimulating brainwave patterns to shift from disturbing patterns to patterns seen in normal sleep behavior.
Classically, TENS has been used for the purpose of pain alleviation. Low-frequency TENS has also been found effective to increase microcirculation and facilitate the absorption of calcific deposits in the shoulder tendons.123,124 The most effective treatment points are believed to be associated with stimulation of the acupuncture points.125 Figure 41-9 displays a possible electrode placement using acupuncture sites. The points used in this arrangement include Jianjing (GB 21), Binao (LI 14), Juga (LI 16), and Jianya (LI 15).126 Any physical modality is only an adjunct in a physical therapy clinic and should be used with prudence.
Having experienced an MRS 2000 and Bemer, I wanted a mat and thought I was getting such a good deal with the OMI. I just want to share my disappointment so that you may benefit from my leaning. First, there is a noise that emanates from the mat and PEMF Supply will tell you that his is normal. Well it isn't with the MRS or Bemer. The noise sounds something like what you might imagine electricity running through a coil would sound. It belied any relaxation for me. Secondly, you will pay at least $225 (my loss in simply returning the system was $374.37) to return it. If you feel you have a faulty mat, you will pay $50 to send it to them to look at and another $50 to send it back to you. For a new product, I feel that is very poor customer service. In light of these aspects, I am not able to recommend the OMI system. If you still want to buy it, I would advise buying from Amazon since they have a return policy.
The basic science work accomplished to date provides strong support for the proposal that modulation of Ca2+ binding to CaM, upon a transient increase in intracellular calcium when homeostasis is interrupted,48 is an important PEMF transduction pathway. It is likely that the disruption of the tightly regulated Ca2+ balance in cells is the natural signal to provoke the endogenous tissue repair and regeneration mechanism, hence the apparent simple acceleration of normal healing activity by targeted PEMF signals. Ca/CaM catalyzes eNOS, which allows the PEMF signal to modulate the release of NO from eNOS and potentially affect the entire tissue repair pathway, from pain and edema to angiogenesis, bone and tissue regeneration, and other regenerative actions. PEMF signals configured to target the Ca/CaM pathway have been applied to rat tendon and wound healing.49,50 In both studies, tendon and wound healing rates were seen to significantly increase by 59% ± 4% (Figure 1, A) and 69% ± 5% (Figure 1, B) in PEMF-treated animals.

The feasibility of PEMF therapy for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has also been investigated in a single-group, open-label, phase I/II clinical study. Forty-one patients with advanced HCC received very low levels of PEMFs modulated at HCC-specific frequencies (100 Hz–21 kHz) and received three-daily 60 min outpatient treatments. No adverse reactions were observed during PEMF treatment. Five patients reported complete disappearance and two patients reported decrease in pain shortly after beginning of treatment. Four patients showed a partial response to treatment, while 16 patients (39%) had stable disease for more than 12 weeks. This study shows that PEMF therapy provides a safe and well-tolerated treatment, as well as evidence of antineoplastic effects in patients with HCC.

I have recently taken a career break from the NHS to follow my passion for cranial work and develop how I integrate the understanding that comes from cranial teachings with movement based practice. Your findings sit so in harmony with my experience. I have to say that I haven't gone out of my way to look further into similar approaches to P.d. - from what I see on you website, you appear to be pioneering a way forward - is this all your own research, or can you point me to other sources too?
I have worked with a number of Parkinson's clients very effectively, but - as is often the case with 'complementary' approach, the challenge is in embracing quite a different way of thinking - and the medication/grip of disease/anxiety and stress are powerful and seductive hooks. The gentlemen I am looking into gut health for has found after a couple of our sessions, but not all the time, he is able to play piano after 9 years of his tremor being too disruptive. Our next work is with me carrying out cranial work while he is playing and exploring the sensory experience/interoceptive experience of doing so - then looking at ways he can find balance and access that 'place' for himself.

As with back pain each of the possible contributing factors need to be examined and included in the treatment plan as appropriate (Kent et al 2005). This means that instead of lumping groups of symptoms together (e.g. rotator cuff symptoms) it has been suggested to split and recognise factors that cause laxity, impingement and/or lesion and provide treatment as the clinician sees fit. Adjuncts in diminishing the chemical reaction of the inflammatory process are rest, therapeutic modalities, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. When the inflammatory mechanism is inhibited, the patient should experience an associated decrease in pain and swelling. Success in achieving these goals has been accomplished through an array of modalities to include laser, microcurrent, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, iontophoresis, and phonophoresis.117 My (MAK) anecdotal choice of modalities to treat the acute inflamed shoulder include cryotherapy and low-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
Bergman et al (2004) compared medical care (consisting of oral analgesics or NSAID, education, advice, corticosteroid infiltrations and physical therapy referral for exercise, modalities, massage after 6 weeks) to medical care with up to 6 treatments of thrust and non-thrust manipulative interventions to the ribs and cervical-thoracic spine over 12 weeks in patients with shoulder symptoms and dysfunction of cervico-thoracic spine and adjacent ribs. At 12 weeks, 43% of the manipulation group and 21% of the medical care group reported full recovery. A 17-percentage point difference favouring manipulation still existed at 52 weeks. During intervention and follow-up a consistent between-group difference in severity of the main complaint, shoulder pain and disability, and general health favoured the manual therapy group.
Bone regeneration can be accelerated in osteotomies made 3.5–4.5 cm distal to the head of the fibula in dogs. A voltage field was induced in the fibula by inductively coupling pulsed electromagnetic fields of low frequency and strength directly to the bone across the skin. Not only did the stimulated osteotomies heal faster than control osteotomies but the regenerated bone was also more highly organized and stronger than control regenerated bone, even though the mass of callus formed was less than in controls. This method has been used to successfully treat tibial pseudoarthroses in young patients. Pseudoarthrosis is a rare, local bone dysplasia that has a very low probability of correction by conventional techniques. Pulsed electromagnetic fields have also been used as a noninvasive postoperative treatment for lumbar vertebral fusion.

The biophysical mechanism(s) of interaction of PEMF on biologic tissues and the biologic transduction mechanism(s) have been vigorously studied.27 One of the first models created was a linear physicochemical approach,22,24,27,28 in which an electrochemical model of the cell membrane was employed to predict a range of PEMF waveform parameters for which bioeffects might be expected. The most generally accepted biophysical transduction step is ion/ligand binding at cell surfaces and junctions that modulate a cascade of biochemical processes, resulting in the observed physiologic effect.25,29–31 A unifying biophysical mechanism that could explain the vast range of reported results and allow predictions of which PEMF signals and exposures are likely to induce a clinically meaningful physiologic effect has been proposed.22,28 The general application of this approach led to the BGS signal in use today. However, that signal is often only marginally effective because further dose quantification needed specific knowledge of the ion, the target site, its binding kinetics, and the cascade involved.
PEMFs have been in clinical use for generations. For most of that time, however, PEMFs have been relegated to second or even third tier status, with some ardent supporters, a number of skeptics, and most clinicians and patients simply unaware of their benefits. Without substantive information about a mechanism of action and frequently being the subject of overzealous marketing and inflated claims, PEMF devices lacked credibility. When the knowledge base in basic sciences allowed for the critical examination of PEMF in the laboratory and provided techniques for both targeting and engineering, the system advanced and the many effects of PEMF signals could be rationalized within at least 1 biologic cascade—one that is dependent on an electrochemical process and can be affected by exogenous signals. It was clear from this work that different PEMF signals and configurations produce widely different results depending on how well targeted those signals are to naturally occurring and biologically salient electrochemical processes. As this body of evidence grows and clinical experience widens, the gaps in the current knowledge (especially concerning optimal treatment regimens for specific conditions) will be filled. At the same time, we anticipate that improved signals and products that are more effective and more ergonomically designed will be developed, and that other electrochemical pathways will be targeted for additional indications. This may finally be the century of electrotherapy. In the meantime, plastic surgeons have at hand a powerful tool for the adjunctive management of postoperative pain and edema and wound repair. PEMF therapy is simple, cost-effective, has no known side effects, and may well play a large role in treatment of otherwise intractable wounds while reducing the cost of health care.
In a parallel but separate evolution, orthopedic surgeons, studying the process by which mechanical signals influence bone growth and repair,16,17 discovered that everyday mechanical signals (walking, jumping, etc.) produced endogenous electrical currents in bone that could modulate bone cell activity.18 This naturally led to the use of exogenous current for bone repair. The first animal studies employed low (microampere) level direct currents (DC) delivered via implanted electrodes that resulted in new bone formation around the negative electrode (cathode19). The first therapeutic devices were based on these early animal studies and used implanted and semi-invasive electrodes delivering DC to the fracture site.20,21 These early applications required the cathode to be near the fracture site because bone growth was limited to the area immediately adjacent to the electrode surface, where chemical changes related to electrolysis occur.

Tesla made this assertion after having used coils as big as three-foot in diameter to treat ailments without making any type of physical contact with their bodies. And it is because of this breakthrough device and its related findings that magnetic field strength today is measured in Tesla (T). While this was all new and extremely hopeful information, especially for that period of time, it wouldn’t be until more than two decades later that PEMF as we know it today would begin to really take form.

In aging and debilitated cells, the inflow of nutrients accompanied is also accompanied with a current of toxic fluids. It has been established that pain is felt as a result of the stimulation of peripheral nociceptors. Magnetic Field Intensity can be measured for both “Static” and “Dynamic” magnetic fields. PEMF is a dynamic magnetic field and can be measured with a suitable instrument. The Earth's core magnetic field (which you can see from a compass reading) is a static magnetic field and it is approximately 250-650 milliguass strength and varies at different locations on the earth.
A number of in vitro studies have shown LIPUS to have direct effects on osteoblasts, including alteration of transmembrane ion transfer, stimulation of immediate-early response genes, elevation of mRNA levels for bone matrix proteins, such as osteocalcin and BSP, and increased synthesis of cytokines and growth factors, including c-Fos, COX-2, IGF-I, nitric oxide, p38/MAPK, PGE2, PI3-K, and VEGF. These changes are consistent with a bone-forming response. This bone-forming response is supported by studies using bone rudiments. In 17-day-old fetal mouse metatarsal bone rudiments, LIPUS treatment for 21 min/day over a period of 7 days was found to stimulate a threefold increase in the average length of the calcified diaphysis, when compared to control rudiments.

Upon return to earth, many astronauts were noted with symptoms of depression, bone loss, decreased metabolism, impaired perception and muscle degeneration. Initially, Scientists were baffled; with nothing to work with they could not explain what was causing these rather extreme symptoms. It is interesting to note that one of the authors (BS) showed significant increases in angiogenesis in an arterial loop model in the rat using the early diathermy-based RF device (Figure 2).51,52 It is also interesting that the use of the BGS signal on human umbilical vein endothelial cells in culture significantly augmented tubule formation53 via a PEMF effect on the production of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2). When FGF-2 was inhibited, the PEMF effect disappeared. This study was extended to examine the effect of BGS on wound repair in diabetic and normal mice,54 in which it was also shown that PEMF significantly increased neovascularization, particularly in diabetic mice, via endogenous FGF-2 increase.
