Laser therapy was not demonstrated to be superior to placebo for patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy (Green et al 2003). Ultrasound (RR 1.81, 95% CI 1.26–2.60) and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (RR 19, 95% CI 1.16–12.43) resulted in improvement compared to placebo with regard to pain in patients with calcific tendinopathy. There is no evidence of an effect for ultrasound in patients with other tendinopathy. Ultrasound also provides no additional benefit when used in combination with exercise interventions over exercise alone (Green et al 2003). There is strong evidence that extra-corporeal shock-wave therapy is no more effective than placebo in patients with impingement with regard to functional limitations (Faber et al 2006).

Although electromagnetic therapy techniques essentially started with Tesla’s three-foot coils, engaging in PEMF therapy today is simpler on the patient and doctor alike. PEMF devices are available in all shapes and sizes, even offering options for home use for patients who want to continue their treatment sessions between office visits. However, if it weren’t for the ideas, curiosities, and ahead-of-their time findings of individuals such as Tesla, Gurvich, and Lakhovsky, PEMF therapy would not be where it is today.

There followed the development of inductively coupled, externally applied electromagnetic field modalities to affect bone repair.22,23 Development of the bone growth stimulator (BGS) signal did not follow from diathermy considerations, but rather from the general electrochemical models developed by one of the authors (AAP).24 As will be seen, although this approach resulted in an effective BGS signal, that signal was not specifically configured for what is now commonly considered to be the PEMF transduction pathway. Nonetheless, a multitude of studies have shown the BGS signal to have sufficient biologic effect to modulate growth factor release.25 Therapeutic uses of these technologies in orthopedics have led to clinical applications approved by regulatory bodies worldwide for the adjunctive treatment of recalcitrant fractures and spine fusion.1,26 Several reports have suggested that the overall success rate of BGS is not significantly different from that of the first bone graft,1 which is a significant benefit for the patient and the health care system.

Three years later, this concept was taken one step further when Georges Lakhovsky shared his ideology and theories that the reinforcement of cell oscillation with radio waves increased their ability to fight off damage or disease. It did this by making them stronger and more resilient, Lakhovsky ascertained. Over the course of the next several decades, many researchers—Royal Raymond Rife, Antoine Priore, Robert Becker, and Abraham Liboff, to name a few—would each identify and research various pieces of information which, together helped create PEMF as we know it today.

Determining whether the injury is traumatic or is related to overuse is the first step to frame the treatment strategies. In the athlete with a trauma history, the initial goal is to control the pain and to restore full shoulder/scapula mobility and strength. The treatment for a partial rotator cuff tear in the overhead throwing athlete centers on the underlying deficiencies seen, such as loss of shoulder motion, scapula dyskinesia, and rotator cuff weakness. Mechanical flaws in the throwing or overhead motion may also need to be corrected.

More than 33% of Americans suffer from chronic pain, and people are searching for solutions other than drugs, unnecessary surgeries and deep injections to provide relief. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF or PEMT) is a non-invasive, painless treatment for various injuries, bone related conditions and pains. The treatment works by emitting a pulsating, varying intensity and frequency electromagnetic field, coming from a solenoid placed around the patient. The application of pulsed magnetic fields has, through research findings, been shown to help the body to restore normal potentials at an accelerated rate, thus aiding the healing of most wounds, regenerating tissue and reducing swelling faster.

Some systematic reviews (Green et al 2003, Faber et al 2006) have supported a combination of manual therapy and exercise for patients with impingement for improvements in pain and function. Manual therapy interventions may be appropriate for restrictions in the glenohumeral joint, shoulder girdle, cervical and thoracic spine, and ribs and are discussed in more detail in Chapters 11, 12, 15 and 20.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy isn’t typically as well-known as other forms of treatment such as chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy. Therefore, many people assume that it’s a relatively new remedy, leaving it wide open for speculation when it comes to its positive effects. However, the truth is, PEMF has actually been used to help people live a healthier life for quite a long time.

EarthPulse™ PEMF enhances magnetic field every night. Feel a decade (or two+ younger in 90 days or return it. And you’ll probably notice the difference in one night, but we give you 90 days. Nothing has that guarantee and you have nothing to lose but your feeling bad and poor sleep. Magnetic Field Deficiency was first identified by the Japanese scientists long ago.
Changes in blood pressure, skin electrical resistance, and pulse amplitude in 163 oncology patients exposed to tumor-specific PEMF frequencies have also been reported suggesting that PEMF therapy does not only target neoplastic cells, but may also have systemic effects. However, long-term PEMF treatment has been shown to be non-toxic, and employs 100,000 times lower frequencies as compared with radiofrequency ablation that is also employed for treatment of many cancers.
