They back this statement by reporting that even hospitalized patients are at risk, with one out of every ten harmed while in what is supposed to be one of the safest medical environments. It only goes to reason then that safety is also a major concern and consideration for patients who are interested in PEMF therapy. So what’s the answer to the question of whether or not PEMF is safe?If you answer this question based on research alone, then PEMF is in fact a safe treatment remedy.

It is interesting to note that one of the authors (BS) showed significant increases in angiogenesis in an arterial loop model in the rat using the early diathermy-based RF device (Figure 2).51,52 It is also interesting that the use of the BGS signal on human umbilical vein endothelial cells in culture significantly augmented tubule formation53 via a PEMF effect on the production of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2). When FGF-2 was inhibited, the PEMF effect disappeared. This study was extended to examine the effect of BGS on wound repair in diabetic and normal mice,54 in which it was also shown that PEMF significantly increased neovascularization, particularly in diabetic mice, via endogenous FGF-2 increase.
Valone said that it was two years short of the 20th century when Tesla reportedly addressed the American Electro-Therapeutic Association, telling its members that “ One of the early observed and remarkable features of the high frequency currents, and one which was chiefly of interest to the physician, was their apparent harmlessness which made it possible to pass relatively great amounts of electrical energy through the body of a person without causing pain or serious discomfort.”
PEMFs have been in clinical use for generations. For most of that time, however, PEMFs have been relegated to second or even third tier status, with some ardent supporters, a number of skeptics, and most clinicians and patients simply unaware of their benefits. Without substantive information about a mechanism of action and frequently being the subject of overzealous marketing and inflated claims, PEMF devices lacked credibility. When the knowledge base in basic sciences allowed for the critical examination of PEMF in the laboratory and provided techniques for both targeting and engineering, the system advanced and the many effects of PEMF signals could be rationalized within at least 1 biologic cascade—one that is dependent on an electrochemical process and can be affected by exogenous signals. It was clear from this work that different PEMF signals and configurations produce widely different results depending on how well targeted those signals are to naturally occurring and biologically salient electrochemical processes. As this body of evidence grows and clinical experience widens, the gaps in the current knowledge (especially concerning optimal treatment regimens for specific conditions) will be filled. At the same time, we anticipate that improved signals and products that are more effective and more ergonomically designed will be developed, and that other electrochemical pathways will be targeted for additional indications. This may finally be the century of electrotherapy. In the meantime, plastic surgeons have at hand a powerful tool for the adjunctive management of postoperative pain and edema and wound repair. PEMF therapy is simple, cost-effective, has no known side effects, and may well play a large role in treatment of otherwise intractable wounds while reducing the cost of health care.
On the show, world-class pain specialist Dr. James Dillard mentioned electromagnetic portable pads to Dr. Oz. These mats produce a therapeutic pulsed electromagnetic field that can surround the entire body. They are not FDA-approved and are not made in the USA. PEMF mats are primarily advertised and distributed over the Internet, often used without medical supervision. Retail price is $2000 to $3000, and often renting is possible for a weekly rate. There are a dozen different companies that make these devices. Three examples are the Mediconsult iMRS/MRS2000, Medithera Home System, and Quantron Resonance System QRS-101.
PEMF has also shown positive effects with Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s, cancer, heart disease, depression, diabetes, endometriosis, epilepsy, headaches, glaucoma, hepatitis, kidney problems, lung disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, pancreatitis, Parkinson’s, sexual disorders, sleep disorders, spinal cord injury, stroke, Tourette’s, ulcers, urinary problems, and more.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy isn’t typically as well-known as other forms of treatment such as chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy. Therefore, many people assume that it’s a relatively new remedy, leaving it wide open for speculation when it comes to its positive effects. However, the truth is, PEMF has actually been used to help people live a healthier life for quite a long time.
All energy is electromagnetic in nature. All atoms, chemicals and cells produce electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Every organ in the body produces its own signature bio-electromagnetic field. Science has proven that our bodies actually project their own magnetic fields and that all 70 trillion cells in the body communicate via electromagnetic frequencies.
This was a rigorous test of wearable pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) for older patients with osteoarthritis of the knee: moderate to severe cases with X-ray evidence and pain of at least 4/10 for more than six months, despite maximum tolerated medication. Sixty patients wore either a real PEMF device for 12 hours per day, or a fake; neither they nor the researchers knew who got real PEMF (double-blind). PEMF is particularly easy to test properly, because it causes no sensation, making it much easier to compare to an active placebo.
Although PEMF therapy may seem like a novel technology, it has been safely and effectively utilized across America and Europe for over five decades. PEMF therapy is surrounded by more than 7,000 studies and clinical trials, including those from NASA, that have demonstrated the advantages of PEMFs. PEMF is a popular therapy used for better health and improved performance of both humans and animals worldwide.
As per published research, PEMF therapy has been proven to be beneficial for a variety of disorders that affect the brain as well as the whole body. PEMF-Devices.com blog is covering many such conditions one-by-one. We also endeavour to find out the extent of healing that happens in various conditions due to PEMF therapy. Finally, we cover PEMF devices for which there are reviews from users that explain their experience as well as the techniques and use guide for these conditions based on reviews and research.
It is this amplified electron spinning which restores the cell’s potential (its energy), regulating its volume at the same time. And, unlike some other forms of CAM, this positive cellular effect lasts for as many as four days after the treatment session has ended. With that, PEMF therapy is: The induction of electricity into the cells to help stimulate or promote healing.

"In October 2008 the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of PEMF therapy for treatment of major depressive disorder in PD patients who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from very high dosages of antidepressant medications. Several studies reported PEMF therapy improved cognitive functions and motor symptoms. For example, an investigation involving three elderly PD patients with cognitive impairment assessed the effect of PEMF therapy on a disorder of the body image in which the patient perceives a part or parts of his body as disproportionately large. After receiving PEMF therapy, PD patients’ drawings showed reversal of macrosomatognosia (assessed by Draw-a-Person test) with reduction of the right parietal lobe dysfunction."
Unfortunately, very few conventional, and even alternative or holistic, doctors know about these devices or this technological area. This is not a subject of mandatory education for doctors. Doctors often learn about these new technologies long after the public does, as has been seen with acupuncture. The process of educating doctors and other non-medical practitioners is growing all the time but will take years. Be patient and look for practitioners who have expertise in the area of PEMF therapies.
It is important to understand that PEMF therapy or any energy medicine device for the matter does not treat disease like a pharmaceutical synthetic drug. What it does is to assist the body so it can heal itself. The body is self-healing, self-regulating and self-regenerating and can heal itself if it is given energy and the right elements needed to sustain life.
Having the intense pain, swelling with discoloration happening right before my eyes. Well, Dr. Pacelli explain that following his procedures would have me walking down the isle in the six weeks’ time, with no pain, swelling and the normal color to my lower leg and ankle area. He stated the bone would be mending but we would not know how much it would be mended until the day before that wonderful date. One of the major therapies was PEMF that I never heard of before but what a different it made to my leg.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF or PEMT) is a non-invasive, painless treatment which works by emitting a pulsating, varying intensity and frequency electromagnetic field, coming from a solenoid placed around the patient. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy was approved by the FDA in 1979 specifically for the healing of nonunion fractures, which came after a Columbia University study that was encouraged by NASA, and has recently gained attention in the U.S (even appearing as a segment on the Dr. Oz Show). The value of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy has been shown to cover a wide range of conditions, with well documented trials carried out by hospitals, rheumatologists, physiotherapists, and neurologists. PEMF was widely used and with great success in the 19th and early 20th century. These primitive electromagnetic therapeutic devices were used by both medical doctors and non-allopathic health practitioners.
PEMF therapy effectiveness in mouse models of breast cancer; Mice were divided into four groups (n = 3 each). Group 1, 2, and 3 were exposed to PEMF therapy (1 Hz, 100 mT) daily for 60, 180, or 360 min, respectively, for 4 weeks, while group 4 did not receive PEMF therapy and was used as control. All mice were monitored for tumor growth by body bioluminescence imaging once every 2 to 4 days for 4 weeks. Then, all the mice were sacrificed and skin, liver, lung, and spleen samples were collected for histopathologic analysis. Mice exposed to PEMFs for 60 and 180 min daily showed a 30% and 70% breast tumor reduction, respectively, at week 4. Mice exposed to PEMF for 360 min daily, showed a suppression of tumor growth at week 4. In summary, this study shows that the time of PEMF exposure is critical to determine its effectiveness. Mice exposed for longer duration (360 min daily for 4 weeks) showed a significant reduction in tumor size, due probably to the inhibition of angiogenesis that may suppress the formation of blood vessels in tumor tissues, reducing the tumor growth.
