NASA (National Aeronautical and Space Administration) also saw the need to develop a means of preventing and treating bone and muscle loss of their astronauts as they explored the moon and other regions of the galaxy. Methods were developed to enhance bone retention, prevent or alleviate muscle atrophy, and enhance natural healing and regeneration whilst in a space environment with little access to conventional treatments.
The scientific reviews of PEMF used for this purpose are unstintingly positive.1Shi Hf, Xiong J, Chen Yx, et al. Early application of pulsed electromagnetic field in the treatment of postoperative delayed union of long-bone fractures: a prospective randomized controlled study. BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2013;14:35. PubMed #23331333. PainSci #53405. “Fracture patients treated with an early application of PEMF achieved a significantly increased rate of union and an overall reduced suffering time compared with patients that receive PEMF after the 6 months or more of delayed union, as described by others.” 2Assiotis A, Sachinis NP, Chalidis BE. Pulsed electromagnetic fields for the treatment of tibial delayed unions and nonunions. A prospective clinical study and review of the literature. J Orthop Surg Res. 2012;7:24. PubMed #22681718. PainSci #53378. “PEMF stimulation is an effective non-invasive method for addressing non-infected tibial union abnormalities. Its success is not associated with specific fracture or patient related variables and it couldn't be clearly considered a time-dependent phenomenon.” When does this happen in musculoskeletal medicine? Never, that’s when!
The day before my wedding Dr. Pacelli performed a second examination with digital x-rays to the lower leg and right ankle. It was a fantastic day for the brake was almost completely healed. I should have known it for I was seen two to three times per week for six weeks and with each visit I was improving. The pain was now just a sore-aching feeling, the swelling was of a minor amount and the discoloration was gone.
Dr. Pawluk also introduced a small, disposable PEMF device called Acti-Patch by Bioelectronics Corp. In Canada, ActiPatch is a Class II device and is sold over-the-counter. Health Canada has approved it for relief of musculoskeletal pain. It is not FDA-approved for musculoskeletal pain, so the efficacy of these patches is still unclear. It may have some benefit with superficial pain and edema.
Good Health, well-being and life in general depend on a functional micro-circulation, the blood flow in the tiniest blood vessels of our bodies, the capillaries. It is exclusively there where nutrients and oxygen, metabolic waste products and carbon dioxide are exchanged with all of the body’s cells. This microcirculatory system represents about 74% of our bodies’ entire network of blood vessels and is therefore one of the most important factors for normal, healthy body function. As we age, our capillaries become less perfused, and the flow of blood to the cells slows. The result is an increased risk of disease, fatigue and premature aging. However, we are able to significantly influence this process with PEMF Technology.
The OMI pulse pad is also available, and has been helpful for those who suffer from carpal tunnel or other localized areas that are painful. The pulse pad can be easily placed on a table or on your lap, allowing you to rest your arm gently on the pulse pad. The pulse pad is compact and battery operated, making it easy to take your therapy wherever you choose to go.
Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (PEFM) Therapy is not a disease-specific therapy. Its effect on the microcirculation and the resulting improvements to the supply and removal of substances to/from the body’s cells allows these cells to produce and supply increasing amounts of energy and therefore in turn carry out their tasks (production) better. This “production increase” and the resulting increased supply to cell products allow the body to reactivate its control cycles, meaning that the body helps itself and can promote the healing process.
Effect of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, configured for the calcium/calmodulin pathway, on (A) a cutaneous full-thickness wound and (B) a transected Achilles' tendon healing in the rat. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy treatment was administered for 30 minutes twice daily for 21 days. The results showed a 59% increase in the tensile strength of the treated wound and a 69% increase in the tensile strength of the tendon. (Courtesy Strauch et al.49,50)
PEMFs have been used extensively for decades for many conditions and medical disciplines, and results can be seen in animals as well as humans. The National Institutes of Health have made PEMFs a priority for research. In fact, many PEMF devices have already been approved by the FDA, some specifically to fuse broken bones, wound healing, pain and tissue swelling, and treat depression. Most therapeutic PEMF devices are considered safe by various standards and organizations.

My interest in PST began in 1995 when a Journal of Rheumatology article suggested that it might alleviate my 15 year old daughter's pain caused by an arthritic condition. Although unable to walk without crutches, two weeks after a course of PST her pain was relieved and she could walk unassisted. A month later she was able to pursue all athletic activities without discomfort. She subsequently enrolled in a martial arts class, recently attained black belt status, and has continued to remain symptom free without the need for any drugs or further treatment for the past five years.
Or, you can get your own equipment. PEMF devices aren’t classified as regulated medical devices, so you don’t need to be a doctor or a chiropractor to buy a PEMF device. If you can afford it, you can get a PEMF mat, pad, or ring. Affording it is the tricky part. The cheapest PEMF mats go for $1,300 or more, and the prices go up from there. As with anything, you get what you pay for, and higher-quality devices run into five figures.
PEMF therapy effectiveness in mouse models of breast cancer; Mice were divided into four groups (n = 3 each). Group 1, 2, and 3 were exposed to PEMF therapy (1 Hz, 100 mT) daily for 60, 180, or 360 min, respectively, for 4 weeks, while group 4 did not receive PEMF therapy and was used as control. All mice were monitored for tumor growth by body bioluminescence imaging once every 2 to 4 days for 4 weeks. Then, all the mice were sacrificed and skin, liver, lung, and spleen samples were collected for histopathologic analysis. Mice exposed to PEMFs for 60 and 180 min daily showed a 30% and 70% breast tumor reduction, respectively, at week 4. Mice exposed to PEMF for 360 min daily, showed a suppression of tumor growth at week 4. In summary, this study shows that the time of PEMF exposure is critical to determine its effectiveness. Mice exposed for longer duration (360 min daily for 4 weeks) showed a significant reduction in tumor size, due probably to the inhibition of angiogenesis that may suppress the formation of blood vessels in tumor tissues, reducing the tumor growth.

The use of a PEMF device is contraindicated for people with pregnancy, epilepsy, bleeding, implanted metals and pacemakers.
A number of in vitro studies have shown LIPUS to have direct effects on osteoblasts, including alteration of transmembrane ion transfer, stimulation of immediate-early response genes, elevation of mRNA levels for bone matrix proteins, such as osteocalcin and BSP, and increased synthesis of cytokines and growth factors, including c-Fos, COX-2, IGF-I, nitric oxide, p38/MAPK, PGE2, PI3-K, and VEGF. These changes are consistent with a bone-forming response. This bone-forming response is supported by studies using bone rudiments. In 17-day-old fetal mouse metatarsal bone rudiments, LIPUS treatment for 21 min/day over a period of 7 days was found to stimulate a threefold increase in the average length of the calcified diaphysis, when compared to control rudiments.
LIPUS stimulates bone union. The initial benefit of LIPUS on the skeleton in vivo is the induction of bone repair in fractures displaying either delayed union or nonunion. In a fracture nonunion model in rodents, 6 weeks of LIPUS treatment stimulated union in 50% of fractures. This compared to a 0% union rate in contralateral fractures treated with inactive-LIPUS (placebo). Clinically, LIPUS stimulates union in more than 85% of fractures that have otherwise failed to heal.
The mat conducts negative ions directly to the body to restore the natural electrical field of organs and cells. Anions, FIR and PEMF help to relieve stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression, relax and bring you the feeling of well-being. PUBMED publications show that these healing technologies may bring immediate soothing for joint, muscle and soft tissues pains and stiffness, reduce arthritis, rheumatism, lyme, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis symptoms, insomnia, sport trauma, minor strains
Separate Cochrane Systematic Reviews evaluating the benefits of electrotherapy modalities as well as assessing the value of manual therapy and exercise for rotator cuff disease have been performed (Page, Green, McBain, et al, 2016; Page, Green, Mrocki, et al, 2016). Modalities such as transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy are examples of the modalities potentially utilized in the electrotherapy evaluation. On the basis of low-quality evidence, therapeutic ultrasound may have short-term benefits for patients with calcific tendinitis, and LLLT may have short-term benefits in patients with rotator cuff disease. The review of the literature identified only 1 of 60 trials to be of high quality regarding manual therapy and exercise, and no benefit was noted.
