The first study utilizing PEMF therapy was conducted by Barbault and coworkers who hypothesized that a combination of defined tumor-specific frequencies, may display therapeutic effectiveness for localized treatment of tumors. They identified a total of 1524 tumor-specific frequencies, ranging from 0.1 to 114 kHz, consisting in the measurement of variations in skin electrical resistance, pulse amplitude, and blood pressure in 163 patients affected by different types of cancer including brain tumors, colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic, colorectal, ovarian, breast, prostate, lung, thyroid, and bladder cancer and exposed to the radiofrequency system.
“The magnet is brilliant and we are sleeping on Recovery mode all the time now, most obvious thing is the amount of energy we have on waking up and throughout the day; no pushing through the day anymore. Jimena, (whom I recommended), also says the same, she is more than happy with her results too. Wind under load readings very high very quickly also.”
How does the PEMF machine work then? As each pulse of electromagnetic energy runs through the body, it improves the cells micro-circulation, simultaneously increasing the blood flow and amount of oxygen available to each cell, which in turn improves the electron transport chain efficiency. In turn this causes the ATP in cells to increase, making them function at optimal levels, making the body expel toxins, absorb nutrients and produce more energy.

Through PEMF therapy, your batteries (i.e. your cells) essentially become recharged. The energy supplied via PEMF waves gives them the energy they need to ward off whatever is threatening them, whether it’s a trauma or disease-based threat. This makes it easier for your patient’s body to restore its health naturally, simply by using the electrical currents and impulses that are already interacting within and throughout their cells. In essence, high-powered PEMF is like a “battery re-charger” for your depleted cells.
Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (PEFM) Therapy is not a disease-specific therapy. Its effect on the microcirculation and the resulting improvements to the supply and removal of substances to/from the body’s cells allows these cells to produce and supply increasing amounts of energy and therefore in turn carry out their tasks (production) better. This “production increase” and the resulting increased supply to cell products allow the body to reactivate its control cycles, meaning that the body helps itself and can promote the healing process.
Several mechanisms of PEMF therapy have been elucidated with regards to cancer. These studies have shown that PEMF therapy may exert proliferative inhibition and mitotic spindle disruption, block the development of neovascularization (blood supply) required for tumor growth and exacerbate an inherent or induced genetic instability by reducing the stringency of the late-cycle (G2) checkpoint. PEMF therapy also modulates gene expression and protein synthesis, interacting with specific DNA sequences within gene promoter regions. PEMFs have also an immunomodulatory effect, as supported by in vivo evidence showing an increase in tumor necrosis factor alpha levels that induce an anti-tumoral response.
Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been shown to have significant beneficial skeletal effects. Ultrasound refers to a high-frequency nonaudible acoustic energy that travels in the form of longitudinal mechanical waves. Traditionally used by physical therapists to intervene in injuries to soft tissues, it is most commonly used with intensity in the range of 0.5–2.0 W/cm2. In comparison, to intervene in injuries to hard tissues (such as bone) pulsed-wave ultrasound with a spatially averaged, temporally averaged intensity (ISATA) of below 0.1 W/cm2 is preferred. ISATA refers to the average ultrasound power over the area of the ultrasound beam (spatial-average) and the average of this intensity over a complete pulse cycle (ultrasound ‘on’ and ‘off’ period; temporal average). Pulsed-wave ultrasound with an ISATA below 0.1 W/cm2 is termed LIPUS and is preferred in the intervention of fracture healing, as its low ISATA significantly reduces the risk of any thermal or cavitational tissue damage—LIPUS has US Food and Drug Administration approval to be applied to bone.
However, I felt the major benefit for myself was in breaking the connection with digestion (full tummy) and symptoms. One of the things which still plagued me was that, after main meals, my symptoms would escalate and the PD medication just wouldn't work for about three hour. Hence most evenings, I would have to endure at least a couple of hours of pain and rigidity, together with the resulting mental anguish.

Although electricity’s potential to aid bone healing was reported as early as 1841, it was not until the mid-1950s that scientists seriously studied the subject. During the 1970s, Bassett and his team introduced a new approach for the treatment of delayed fractures, a technique that employed a very specific biphasic low frequency signal[10][11][12][13] to be applied for non-union/delayed fractures. The use of electrical stimulation in the lumbosacral region was first attempted by Alan Dwyer of Australia. In 1974, he reported successful initiation of graft incorporation in 11 of 12 fusion patients.[14][15]

I felt horrible. Nobody wants to be told they have cancer. I was afraid, my family was afraid. I watched a documentary on cancer and through it I found a loving, wonderful clinic. I learned how amazing our immune systems are and how our bodies can fight cancer! I came to the clinic and I was shocked. I didn’t know cancer treatment could look like this.

The development of modern PEMF has followed two separate pathways. The first pathway originated in more conventional (and still useful) electromagnetic field technologies broadly known as radio frequency (RF) diathermy.4 Continuous RF produces heat, the therapeutic component frequently employed in physical therapy. One early user of diathermy suspected that it could produce a nonthermal biologic effect.5 To test this idea clinically, the RF signal was intermittently pulsed, thereby eliminating heat. Positive outcomes, especially in treating inflammatory conditions, were reported.5 The first therapeutic RF PEMF device, the Diapulse, was commercialized in 19506 and was eventually cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the postoperative treatment of pain and edema in soft tissue. Clinical devices in use since that time typically have consisted of a large signal generator and a bulky coil applicator positioned over the area of injury that delivers therapy noninvasively, through either dressings or clothing. Early devices were expensive, nonportable, and produced significant electromagnetic interference (EMI); these factors restricted more widespread use in outpatient and home settings.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy isn’t typically as well-known as other forms of treatment such as chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy. Therefore, many people assume that it’s a relatively new remedy, leaving it wide open for speculation when it comes to its positive effects. However, the truth is, PEMF has actually been used to help people live a healthier life for quite a long time.
Determining whether the injury is traumatic or is related to overuse is the first step to frame the treatment strategies. In the athlete with a trauma history, the initial goal is to control the pain and to restore full shoulder/scapula mobility and strength. The treatment for a partial rotator cuff tear in the overhead throwing athlete centers on the underlying deficiencies seen, such as loss of shoulder motion, scapula dyskinesia, and rotator cuff weakness. Mechanical flaws in the throwing or overhead motion may also need to be corrected.

Conventional medicine continues to be dominated by mechanical/chemical thinking (surgery and medication treatments). However, Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields Therapy already forms part of conventional medicine as a complementary treatment method. It is currently accepted by specialist medical bodies and is a key topic in medical working groups and a current object of research in a number of universities.

Our alphabetised-by-disorder Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy Research Index contains more than a thousand peer-reviewed pulsed electromagnetic field therapy citations to aid you in your PEMF therapy research. The primary purpose of this website is to give those interested in PEMF's (pulsed electromagnetic fields) insights into the fundamental significance, the scientific background and the effects of the increasingly popular complementary medical application of PEMF's. In the last 5 years much has been accomplished and positively changed specifically in the field of PEMF systems for home use.
At SelfHacked, it’s our goal to offer our readers all the tools possible to get optimally healthy. When I was struggling with chronic health issues I felt stuck because I didn’t have any tools to help me get better. I had to spend literally thousands of hours trying to read through studies on pubmed to figure out how the body worked and how to fix it.

On the show, world-class pain specialist Dr. James Dillard mentioned electromagnetic portable pads to Dr. Oz. These mats produce a therapeutic pulsed electromagnetic field that can surround the entire body. They are not FDA-approved and are not made in the USA. PEMF mats are primarily advertised and distributed over the Internet, often used without medical supervision. Retail price is $2000 to $3000, and often renting is possible for a weekly rate. There are a dozen different companies that make these devices. Three examples are the Mediconsult iMRS/MRS2000, Medithera Home System, and Quantron Resonance System QRS-101.
Less common causes of shoulder pain are suprascapular or long thoracic nerve entrapment. Problems not to be missed include thoracic outlet syndrome (e.g. cervical rib), circulation problems (e.g. axillary vein thrombosis), bone tumour, or referred pain from diaphragm or organs (e.g. heart, gallbladder, spleen, apex of the lungs, or duodenum) (Brukner et al 2001e).

PEMF has been known to completely reverse chronic pain and alleviate or greatly reduce other symptoms after only a few sessions. Within days of use, it has the capacity to accelerate injury recovery that normally would have taken weeks or months to fully recovery from. PEMF treatment is also very effective but gentle for an area which may be too sore to touch and manually massage. Now you have a choice! You don’t have to live with pain.
When it comes to joints, arthritis is often one of the biggest concerns. However, PEMF helps not only with arthritic symptoms, but also potentially the cause as one piece of research in the Indian Journal of Experimental Biology found that “the use of PEMF for arthritis cure has conclusively shown that PEMF not only alleviates the pain in the arthritis condition but it also affords chondroprotection, exerts anti-inflammatory action and helps in bone remodeling.” 4
An open-label pilot study of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy in the treatment of failed back surgery syndrome pain; Wayne L Harper; Int Med Case Rep J. 2015; 8: 13–22 The primary objective of this open-label exploratory study was to investigate the analgesic effectiveness of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy administered twice daily over a 45-day period in 34 subjects (68% female) with persistent or recurrent pain following back surgery. Of the 30 per-protocol subjects who completed the study, 33% reported a clinically meaningful (≥30%) reduction in pain intensity (PI). A higher response rate (60%) was reported for subjects who had undergone discectomy prior to the trial compared to subjects who had undergone other types of surgical interventions (decompression or fusion) without discectomy. Improvements in PI were paralleled by improvements in secondary outcomes. Relative to baseline, responders reported an average 44% and 55% reduction in back PI and leg PI (respectively), and an average 13% improvement in Oswestry Disability Index scores. In the per-protocol population, 50% of responders and 12% of non-responders reported less analgesia consumption at the end of treatment versus baseline. Sixty-seven percent of per-protocol responders and 0% of non-responders reported clinically meaningful improvement in overall well-being on the Patient Global Impression of Change scale.
A simple way to understand the how EMFs impact our cells is comparing the EMF to a battery charger and our body to a large number of small batteries (our cells). Every battery is made to operate properly within a certain voltage range. If you overcharge the battery it will burn out, this is similar to what happens to our cells when exposed to high frequency EMFs our cells are not compatible with. In comparison if you use the correct Battery Charger voltage the battery will charge properly, this is what the correct PEMF does for our cells. PEMFs charges our cells with the energy they are designed to operate at and need to operate at their maximum potential. BAD EMF's will burn out our body cells and other illness's will cause effectively a discharging of our body cell's.
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation which is a non-invasive drug free method of pain relief for both symptomatic and chronic pain. Transcutaneous means across the skin. A TENS machine relieves pain by sending tiny electrical impulses through electrodes placed on or near the area of pain or pressure point to underlying nerve fibres.

So, one of the early major turnarounds I gained from using the PEMF device was that, if I put it on the back of my right shoulder [a placement I initially chose for convenience, but also since my right scalene/shoulder/clavicle region is the area where my residual pain and rigidity remains the greatest], just as I sit down to dinner, and leave it there for an hour, then I found this actually prevented much of the subsequent symptomatic shut down and medication ineffectiveness due to digestive impacts.

Thousands of research studies have shown that PEMF therapy promotes healthy cell function. This is likely because PEMF or Pulsed Electromagnetic Field  therapy stimulates electrical charges in the cell and creates an improved energy supply, which then reactivates and revitalises cells whose function has been restricted: This becomes even more vital for those of us over our 50's and older! After plugging in your mat, turn up the temperature to the maximum setting for 10 minutes to allow the mat to warm up. Doing this allows the copper coils in the mat to become fully heated, releasing more PEMF waves. After 10 minutes, reduce the temperature to a desired temperature and once the mat reaches that temperature, lie down on the PEMF mat and begin your mat session.
In addition to its benefits on fractures displaying a failed healing response, LIPUS can substantially accelerate the rate of repair of fresh fractures. LIPUS also promotes greater bone content in fracture callus, more rapid endochondral ossification, and quicker recovery of stiffness in ovariectomy-induced osteoporotic, as well as diabetic, rats. In humans, LIPUS can reduce the time for recovery of clinical and radiographic union by 30–38%. This represents a reduction in healing time of 58, 37, and 19 days in tibial diaphyseal, distal radius, and scaphoid fractures, respectively.
PEMF Therapy has been proven to be a very effective method to restore and maintain cellular function by re-balancing the cellular membrane functions and improve oxygenation of the cells and nutrient flow and as well as to detoxify the cells. As more cells are re-balanced the natural regeneration process occurs. PEMF Therapy has also been shown to be effective in counteracting the negative affects of the BAD EMF's.
Oxidative free radicals are formed when O2 reaching the cell is not burned adequately (by the mitochondria). Lab geeks call it “Oxygen Leakage”. The worse the leakage, the higher the oxidative stress. Get it? You can flood the body with oxygen using ozone or hyperbaric chambers and that’s fine, but if that oxygen reaches the cell and isn’t burned properly your oxidative load skyrockets. Unlike hyperbaric or hypoxic training, EarthPulse™ PEMF results in a natural rise of blood and tissue oxygen. It sticks with you for days. Permanently for a routine user.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy can non-invasively treat a variety of pathologies by delivering electric and magnetic fields to tissues via inductive coils. The electromagnetic fields generated by these devices have been found to affect a variety of biological processes and basic science understanding of the underlying mechanisms of action of PEMF treatment has accelerated in the last 10 years. Accumulating clinical evidence supports the use of PEMF therapy in both animals and humans for specific clinical indications including bone healing, wound healing, osteoarthritis and inflammation, and treatment of post-operative pain and edema. While there is some confusion about PEMF as a clinical treatment modality, it is increasingly being prescribed by veterinarians. In an effort to unravel the confusion surrounding PEMF devices, this article reviews important PEMF history, device taxonomy, mechanisms of action, basic science and clinical evidence, and relevant trends in veterinary medicine. The data reviewed underscore the usefulness of PEMF treatment as a safe, non-invasive treatment modality that has the potential to become an important stand-alone or adjunctive treatment modality in veterinary care.

Amethyst Crystals actually elongate and amplify the natural wavelength of a key component to the treatments, the far infrared rays, allowing them to penetrate up to 7 inches deep into the body. By comparison, other far infrared technologies may only penetrate less than half that depth. Amethyst’s healing properties have been acknowledged and celebrated for centuries by ancient scientists and healers.  Now, modern science has confirmed the highly conductive properties of this remarkable mineral.  Amethyst crystals offer the most consistent and powerful delivery of far infrared light waves, and ionic effects to the human body.
This was a rigorous test of wearable pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) for older patients with osteoarthritis of the knee: moderate to severe cases with X-ray evidence and pain of at least 4/10 for more than six months, despite maximum tolerated medication. Sixty patients wore either a real PEMF device for 12 hours per day, or a fake; neither they nor the researchers knew who got real PEMF (double-blind). PEMF is particularly easy to test properly, because it causes no sensation, making it much easier to compare to an active placebo.
I bought a mat because I’ve read so much research over the last few years on Beamer therapy. I had to protruding discs in my lower back years ago and my job requires me to drive a lot . So I usually have a lot of stiffness & back pain. I used pemf about 7 times now and my back pain is so relieved. I can go hours of driving without as much back pain. When I wake up in the morning I’m not as stiff and I have seen ALIT of energy. I have a friend who uses mine for LUPUS and they have seen nothing but more energy. I definitely would recommend this, and will be purchasing more.

"PEMF therapy improves PD symptoms including tremor, slowness of movement and difficulty in walking. It is non-invasive, safe and improves PD patients’ quality of life. PEMF therapy, employed for PD treatment, supports the body’s own healing process for 4–6 h after therapy session. It can be used at home and applied to the entire body or locally to target a specific body area and, if compared with dopaminergic systemic therapy, e.g. l-dopa, it can offer an alternative treatment avoiding systemic side effects such as hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity."

Changes in blood pressure, skin electrical resistance, and pulse amplitude in 163 oncology patients exposed to tumor-specific PEMF frequencies have also been reported suggesting that PEMF therapy does not only target neoplastic cells, but may also have systemic effects. However, long-term PEMF treatment has been shown to be non-toxic, and employs 100,000 times lower frequencies as compared with radiofrequency ablation that is also employed for treatment of many cancers.
This entire range of effects because your cells and their mitochondria get an electronic “tune up” each night from the long duration exposure to these very-weak, frequency-specific pulsed electromagnetic fields. The mitochondria respond by improving cell respiration i.e. oxygen metabolism.  See our 10 Hz citations to learn about the mechanism; beginning with a 2 & 3 fold increase of the two key enzymes required for oxygen transport into and inside the mitochondria. PEMF therapy is aimed at recharging depleted cells to stimulate healing of ailments and increase your overall state of wellness. PEMF therapy has already been FDA approved to fuse bones and has been cleared to reduce swelling and joint pain with certain devices. It is being used by countless Olympic teams and sports trainers for its pain relief and rapid recovery attributes.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) transduction mechanism based on evidence to date that many athermal PEMF effects depend upon nitric oxide cascades. PEMFs can be configured to modulate calcium-binding kinetics to calmodulin. Calcium/calmodulin then activates nitric oxide synthase and the relevant cascade ensues dependent upon stage of tissue repair process. This mechanism has been proposed as a working model for PEMF therapeutics.61
