My interest in PST began in 1995 when a Journal of Rheumatology article suggested that it might alleviate my 15 year old daughter's pain caused by an arthritic condition. Although unable to walk without crutches, two weeks after a course of PST her pain was relieved and she could walk unassisted. After plugging in your mat, turn up the temperature to the maximum setting for 10 minutes to allow the mat to warm up. Although I am certified in cardiology and gastroenterology, a significant portion of my practice is now devoted to exploring how PST achieves its benefits.10 I have treated 1000 patients, most of whom had knee OA, with very gratifying results similar to those reported in the literature. The panel cited two prior efforts to establish guidelines for treating knee OA, emphasising that these “primarily represent consensus statements from expert panels” and “The type and strength of evidence to support such guidelines remain unclear.” Their stated objective, therefore, was to “develop guidelines relating to clinical issues in OA management, and to indicate clearly the level of evidence to support individual statements”. However, electromagnetic therapy approaches were again omitted, though at least one of the members is quite familiar with PST. The reason for this exclusion is not clear and I believe that your readership deserves to be aware of this extremely safe and effective option.
PEMFs have been in clinical use for generations. For most of that time, however, PEMFs have been relegated to second or even third tier status, with some ardent supporters, a number of skeptics, and most clinicians and patients simply unaware of their benefits. Without substantive information about a mechanism of action and frequently being the subject of overzealous marketing and inflated claims, PEMF devices lacked credibility. When the knowledge base in basic sciences allowed for the critical examination of PEMF in the laboratory and provided techniques for both targeting and engineering, the system advanced and the many effects of PEMF signals could be rationalized within at least 1 biologic cascade—one that is dependent on an electrochemical process and can be affected by exogenous signals. It was clear from this work that different PEMF signals and configurations produce widely different results depending on how well targeted those signals are to naturally occurring and biologically salient electrochemical processes. As this body of evidence grows and clinical experience widens, the gaps in the current knowledge (especially concerning optimal treatment regimens for specific conditions) will be filled. At the same time, we anticipate that improved signals and products that are more effective and more ergonomically designed will be developed, and that other electrochemical pathways will be targeted for additional indications. This may finally be the century of electrotherapy. In the meantime, plastic surgeons have at hand a powerful tool for the adjunctive management of postoperative pain and edema and wound repair. PEMF therapy is simple, cost-effective, has no known side effects, and may well play a large role in treatment of otherwise intractable wounds while reducing the cost of health care.

PEMF has FDA recognition for different conditions such as wound healing, tissue swelling, pain treatment, bone regeneration and even depression. PEMF is non-contact, non-invasive, non-pharmacological and effective support for many health conditions. Worldwide more than 2,000 double blind, university level medical studies have demonstrated that PEMF therapy is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions, as well as to promote and maintain general cellular health and function.
Cognitive functioning after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with cerebrovascular disease without dementia: a pilot study of seven patients; Rektorova; J Neurol Sci. 2005 Mar 15;229-230:157-61 This study aimed to examine whether one session of high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) would induce any measurable cognitive changes in patients with cerebrovascular disease and mild cognitive deficits. Seven patients with cerebrovascular disease and mild executive dysfunction entered the randomized, controlled, blinded study with a crossover design. rTMS was applied either over the left DLPFC (an active stimulation site) or over the left motor cortex (MC; a control stimulation site) in one session. Each patient participated in both stimulation sessions (days 1 and 4) and the order of stimulation sites (DLPFC or MC) was randomized. A short battery of neuropsychological tests was performed by a blinded psychologist prior to and after each rTMS session. Psychomotor speed, executive function, and memory were evaluated. Results: mild but significant stimulation site-specific effect of rTMS was observed in the Stroop interference results (i.e. improvement) after the stimulation of DLPFC in comparison with the baseline scores (Wilcoxon, Z=-2.03, p=0.04). Patients improved in the digit symbols subtest of the Wechsler adult intelligence scale-revised after both rTMS sessions regardless of the stimulation site.
Less common causes of shoulder pain are suprascapular or long thoracic nerve entrapment. Problems not to be missed include thoracic outlet syndrome (e.g. cervical rib), circulation problems (e.g. axillary vein thrombosis), bone tumour, or referred pain from diaphragm or organs (e.g. heart, gallbladder, spleen, apex of the lungs, or duodenum) (Brukner et al 2001e).
So, one of the early major turnarounds I gained from using the PEMF device was that, if I put it on the back of my right shoulder [a placement I initially chose for convenience, but also since my right scalene/shoulder/clavicle region is the area where my residual pain and rigidity remains the greatest], just as I sit down to dinner, and leave it there for an hour, then I found this actually prevented much of the subsequent symptomatic shut down and medication ineffectiveness due to digestive impacts.

This was a rigorous test of wearable pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) for older patients with osteoarthritis of the knee: moderate to severe cases with X-ray evidence and pain of at least 4/10 for more than six months, despite maximum tolerated medication. Sixty patients wore either a real PEMF device for 12 hours per day, or a fake; neither they nor the researchers knew who got real PEMF (double-blind). PEMF is particularly easy to test properly, because it causes no sensation, making it much easier to compare to an active placebo.

Some people report a mild headache after their first few PEMF therapy sessions. Since Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields stimulate neurons1 and enhance cellular repair2, these effects are temporary and are a small cost to pay for the repair that takes place. Eventually, the pain relief3 effects start appearing after the user is acclimatized to the magnetic field. Others report no such symptoms and take to PEMF like fish to water with zero negative side effects of PEMF therapy.
Stationary (or “static”), non-varying, magnetic fields from magnets have fixed strengths. They are used in mattresses, bracelets, knee wraps and the like. Most have very shallow penetration into the body, resulting in a very limited ability to affect deeper tissues, and they rarely treat all the cells of the body simultaneously. Only skilled practitioners may guide you to get the best results from these approaches.
Corticosteroid injections can be beneficial in reducing symptoms (Green et al 2003). Also, an ultrasound scan can assist with assessing the degree of tendon degeneration as well as showing the presence of bursitis, whereas an X-ray can exclude calcific tendinitis or degenerative joint changes of the acromioclavicular joint. MRI can exclude problems in the glenohumeral joint (e.g. labral tears).
Dr. Pawluk also introduced a small, disposable PEMF device called Acti-Patch by Bioelectronics Corp. In Canada, ActiPatch is a Class II device and is sold over-the-counter. Health Canada has approved it for relief of musculoskeletal pain. It is not FDA-approved for musculoskeletal pain, so the efficacy of these patches is still unclear. It may have some benefit with superficial pain and edema.

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy was approved by the FDA in 1979 specifically for the healing of nonunion fractures, which came after a Columbia University study that was encouraged by NASA, and has recently gained attention in the U.S (even appearing as a segment on the Dr. Oz Show). The value of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy has been shown to cover a wide range of conditions, with well documented trials carried out by hospitals, rheumatologists, physiotherapists, and neurologists.
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy has been used for centuries in various forms and was researched notably by Nikola Tesla and NASA. Only recently have the benefits of PEMF therapy started to gain popularity, receiving the support of respected members of the scientific community such as Dr. Oz and double Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling.
The biophysical mechanism(s) of interaction of PEMF on biologic tissues and the biologic transduction mechanism(s) have been vigorously studied.27 One of the first models created was a linear physicochemical approach,22,24,27,28 in which an electrochemical model of the cell membrane was employed to predict a range of PEMF waveform parameters for which bioeffects might be expected. The most generally accepted biophysical transduction step is ion/ligand binding at cell surfaces and junctions that modulate a cascade of biochemical processes, resulting in the observed physiologic effect.25,29–31 A unifying biophysical mechanism that could explain the vast range of reported results and allow predictions of which PEMF signals and exposures are likely to induce a clinically meaningful physiologic effect has been proposed.22,28 The general application of this approach led to the BGS signal in use today. However, that signal is often only marginally effective because further dose quantification needed specific knowledge of the ion, the target site, its binding kinetics, and the cascade involved.

There is nothing new about Electromagnetic therapy. It has been around for over 100 years, according to James L. Oschman PhD, in Energy Medicine (Second Edition), 2016, it has been used by the former Soviet Union as complementary treatment to pharmacology. Pulsing electromagnetic field therapy was used by the cosmonauts during the Soviet space explorations, to help reduce the loss of bone density that occurs when they were removed from the Earth’s gravitational and magnetic fields.
Classically, TENS has been used for the purpose of pain alleviation. Low-frequency TENS has also been found effective to increase microcirculation and facilitate the absorption of calcific deposits in the shoulder tendons.123,124 The most effective treatment points are believed to be associated with stimulation of the acupuncture points.125 Figure 41-9 displays a possible electrode placement using acupuncture sites. The points used in this arrangement include Jianjing (GB 21), Binao (LI 14), Juga (LI 16), and Jianya (LI 15).126 Any physical modality is only an adjunct in a physical therapy clinic and should be used with prudence.

PEMF may seem like a new technology, however it has been used throughout Europe and other countries for 50+ years. Over 2,000 double blind medical studies have documented the neurological, physiological and psychological positive effects of PEMF. It has repeatedly shown IMPROVED tissue repair in far less time, with NO adverse reactions. In fact, PEMF has received a boost in exposure since NASA used the therapy to treat astronauts.

PEMFs address impaired chemistry and thus the function of cells – which in turn, improves health. PEMFs deliver beneficial, health-enhancing EMFs and frequencies to the cells. Low frequency PEMFs of even the weakest strengths pass right through the body, penetrating every cell, tissue, organ and even bone without being absorbed or altered! As they pass through, they stimulate most of the electrical and chemical processes in the tissues. Therapeutic PEMFs are specifically designed to positively support cellular energy, resulting in better cellular health and function.
Several mechanisms of PEMF therapy have been elucidated with regards to cancer. These studies have shown that PEMF therapy may exert proliferative inhibition and mitotic spindle disruption, block the development of neovascularization (blood supply) required for tumor growth and exacerbate an inherent or induced genetic instability by reducing the stringency of the late-cycle (G2) checkpoint. PEMF therapy also modulates gene expression and protein synthesis, interacting with specific DNA sequences within gene promoter regions. PEMFs have also an immunomodulatory effect, as supported by in vivo evidence showing an increase in tumor necrosis factor alpha levels that induce an anti-tumoral response.
More recently our bodies have been bombarded with unnatural and harmful EMF's. As well we are working and living in unnatural environments which block the natural earth emf's (which we need). This is a similar experience of astronauts in space who were affected by the lack of the natural earths emf's and then negatively affected. With all this advent of “modern” technology now we require these other methods of PEMF Therapy to help bring our bodies back into balance. And there are many other things (pollutants, improper nutrition, and many others) which take the body out of its natural balance where PEMF Therapy is essential. The other factors such as proper nutrition etc.still need to be addressed.
