They can be. Evidence is mounting that a new form of pollution called “electrosmog” is a very real threat because it is disruptive to cell metabolism. PEMF therapy effectiveness in mouse models of breast cancer; Mice were divided into four groups (n = 3 each). Group 1, 2, and 3 were exposed to PEMF therapy (1 Hz, 100 mT) daily for 60, 180, or 360 min, respectively, for 4 weeks, while group 4 did not receive PEMF therapy and was used as control. All mice were monitored for tumor growth by body bioluminescence imaging once every 2 to 4 days for 4 weeks. Then, all the mice were sacrificed and skin, liver, lung, and spleen samples were collected for histopathologic analysis. Mice exposed to PEMFs for 60 and 180 min daily showed a 30% and 70% breast tumor reduction, respectively, at week 4. Mice exposed to PEMF for 360 min daily, showed a suppression of tumor growth at week 4. In summary, this study shows that the time of PEMF exposure is critical to determine its effectiveness. Mice exposed for longer duration (360 min daily for 4 weeks) showed a significant reduction in tumor size, due probably to the inhibition of angiogenesis that may suppress the formation of blood vessels in tumor tissues, reducing the tumor growth.

A simple way to understand the how EMFs impact our cells is comparing the EMF to a battery charger and our body to a large number of small batteries (our cells). Visual, manual, and verbal feedback combined with education on faulty movement patterns provided significantly decreased electromyographic activity in the upper and middle trapezius, infraspinatus, serratus anterior, and anterior and middle deltoid muscles of patients with impingement immediately and 24 hours after movement training, whereas trunk, shoulder, and clavicular kinematics improved during and immediately after training, especially in the subset of patients with elevated clavicular position supporting the role of educating patients on correct movement patterns (Roy et al 2009).

The most recent studies of the PEMF transduction pathway have concentrated upon the Ca/CaM-dependent nitric oxide (NO) cascades. It is within this system that the effectiveness of PEMF is now understood to function. However, those linkages were dependent on the discovery that NO is a signaling molecule.41 NO is synthesized via nitric oxide synthase (NOS), that has several different isoforms.42 When injury occurs, large amounts of NO are produced by long-lived inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). In this cascade, tissue levels of NO persist and the prolonged presence of this free radical is proinflammatory,43 which accounts for the leaky blood vessels associated with pain and swelling.44 In contrast, the endothelial and neuronal nitric oxide synthase isoforms (eNOS and nNOS, respectively) produce NO in short bursts that can immediately relax blood and lymph vessels.45,46 These short bursts of NO also lead to the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, which in turn drives growth factor production.47 Interestingly, iNOS is not dependent on CaM,43 while the constitutive or cNOS (eNOS or nNOS) cascade is dependent on the binding of Ca/CaM. Therapies that could accelerate Ca/CaM binding, therefore, should impact all phases of tissue repair, from initial pain and swelling to blood vessel growth, tissue regeneration, and remodeling.42
Although the aforementioned studies suggest that PEMF effects on the Ca/CaM/NO cascades were responsible for the reported biologic effects, cellular and animal studies in which the use of inhibitors for selected steps in this cascade provide the strongest support. One well-designed study clearly showed DNA synthesis in articular chondrocytes in vitro was increased by PEMF via a NO pathway. This study systematically used CaM, NOS, and cGMP inhibitors that individually eliminated the PEMF effect on DNA synthesis.55 PEMF effects on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation were shown to be mediated by NO.56 Direct evidence of the effect of a PEMF signal configured for the Ca/CaM pathway on real-time NO production in a neuronal cell line, which could be eliminated by CaM and NOS inhibitors, has also recently been reported.57,58 Finally, 2 of the authors (BS and AAP) showed that PEMFs configured for the NO pathway significantly increased angiogenesis in a thermal myocardial injury in the rat.59,60 This effect was eliminated in rats who were fed NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a NOS inhibitor (Figure 3).
Although electricity’s potential to aid bone healing was reported as early as 1841, it was not until the mid-1950s that scientists seriously studied the subject. During the 1970s, Bassett and his team introduced a new approach for the treatment of delayed fractures, a technique that employed a very specific biphasic low frequency signal[10][11][12][13] to be applied for non-union/delayed fractures. The use of electrical stimulation in the lumbosacral region was first attempted by Alan Dwyer of Australia. In 1974, he reported successful initiation of graft incorporation in 11 of 12 fusion patients.[14][15]
PEMFs are frequency-based, applied to either the whole body or parts of the body.  PEMFs may only be needed for short periods of time, while the effects last for many hours, setting in motion cellular and whole-body changes to restore and maintain balance in metabolism and health. The body does not acclimate, or “get used to,” the healthy energy signals of therapeutic PEMFs, even if used for a long time, compared to magnets.
There is nothing new about Electromagnetic therapy. It has been around for over 100 years, according to James L. Exposure to a specific pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) has been shown to produce analgesic (antinociceptive) effects in many organisms. In a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial, patients with either chronic generalized pain from fibromyalgia (FM) or chronic localized musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain were exposed to a PEMF (400 μT) through a portable device fitted to their head during twice-daily 40 min treatments over seven days. The effect of this PEMF on pain reduction was recorded using a visual analogue scale. A differential effect of PEMF over sham treatment was noticed in patients with FM, which approached statistical significance (P=0.06) despite low numbers (n=17); this effect was not evident in those without FM (P=0.93; n=15). PEMF may be a novel, safe and effective therapeutic tool for use in at least certain subsets of patients with chronic, nonmalignant pain.
Although the results seem straightforwardly positive, the authors explain that “some of the effects of this therapeutic approach might be derived from neuromodulation of the pain mechanism”: that is, it might be “just” a pain-killer, as opposed to actually helping to heal arthritic cartilage. (But killing pain effectively would be a pretty good second place.)

I bought a mat because I’ve read so much research over the last few years on Beamer therapy. I had to protruding discs in my lower back years ago and my job requires me to drive a lot . So now I can return to the question I posed at the beginning of this article, “Is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy dangerous?” In short, No. From all the evidence I have seen and read, there seems to be no immediate damage caused by PEMF. If in fact, this is just an artificially recreated version of the Earths own Pulsed Electromagnetic Field, then I can understand why we aren’t being damaged by it; after all we did evolve under its effects.

Besides their well-known side effects like addiction and toxicity, most modern remedies for pain can only soothe pain temporarily and are ineffective for the treatment chronic pain; the underlying condition causing pain has to be resolved. Ground breaking achievements in the field of Biomagnetics seem to be paving the way for the emergence of more tenacious way to manage and reduce pain in the form of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) and heal the underlying condition at the same time.

Widely used in Europe, and growing in popularity across North America, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy has been used for decades by doctors, chiropractors, naturopaths and even veterinarians. The panel cited two prior efforts to establish guidelines for treating knee OA, emphasising that these “primarily represent consensus statements from expert panels” and “The type and strength of evidence to support such guidelines remain unclear.” Their stated objective, therefore, was to “develop guidelines relating to clinical issues in OA management, and to indicate clearly the level of evidence to support individual statements”. However, electromagnetic therapy approaches were again omitted, though at least one of the members is quite familiar with PST. The reason for this exclusion is not clear and I believe that your readership deserves to be aware of this extremely safe and effective option.
The initial development of PEMF technology and its evolution over most of the last century was marred by poor presentation and, in many cases, insufficient knowledge of the scientific basis of action. However, plastic and reconstructive surgeons have been early adopters of the therapy and pioneers, along with their basic science colleagues, in developing what is now a significant and rigorous body of evidence around the mechanism of action. "PEMF therapy applied to a 49-year-old male PD patient with stage 3 disease, as assessed by Hoehn and Yahr scale, resulted in a marked improvement in motor and non-motor symptoms such as mood swings, sleeplessness, pain and sexual and cognitive dysfunctions, suggesting that PEMF therapy should be tested in large cohorts of PD patients as monotherapy and should also be considered as a treatment modality for de novo diagnosed PD patients. PEMF therapy was also effective in improving visuospatial deficits in four PD patients. Moreover, PEMF therapy improved PD-associated freezing (a symptom manifesting as a sudden attack of immobility usually experienced during walking) in 3 PD patients".
The list of conditions that have been studied using PEMF therapy is extensive and the research continues today. Pulsed electromagnetic field mats have become a more commonly used device in the last 5 years, and studies have shown that it has been a welcome change for those who are unable to find relief from other therapies, or when surgical procedures have failed.
