This was a rigorous test of wearable pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) for older patients with osteoarthritis of the knee: moderate to severe cases with X-ray evidence and pain of at least 4/10 for more than six months, despite maximum tolerated medication. Sixty patients wore either a real PEMF device for 12 hours per day, or a fake; neither they nor the researchers knew who got real PEMF (double-blind). PEMF is particularly easy to test properly, because it causes no sensation, making it much easier to compare to an active placebo.

Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (PEFM) Therapy is not a disease-specific therapy. Its effect on the microcirculation and the resulting improvements to the supply and removal of substances to/from the body’s cells allows these cells to produce and supply increasing amounts of energy and therefore in turn carry out their tasks (production) better. This “production increase” and the resulting increased supply to cell products allow the body to reactivate its control cycles, meaning that the body helps itself and can promote the healing process.
Although I am certified in cardiology and gastroenterology, a significant portion of my practice is now devoted to exploring how PST achieves its benefits.10 I have treated 1000 patients, most of whom had knee OA, with very gratifying results similar to those reported in the literature. Magnetic therapy is simply the therapeutic application of magnets and can be delivered in many forms. In a 12-week, randomized trial, subjects with MS laid down on a metal mat for 8 minutes twice daily. The device delivered low-frequency, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. Another study had subjects with MS wear wristwatch-size, magnetic pulsing devices called Enermed for 10 to 24 hours daily for 2 months. Another device also delivered low-frequency magnetic stimulations at 37.5 mT and a sequence of pulses at 4 to 7 Hz three times weekly for 2 months. These studies demonstrated consistent benefits in reducing fatigue but no benefit for depression in subjects with MS.53
