PEMF is clearly kin to TENS, part of the electrotherapy family. And yet it’s a different beast, much more exotic, with a more mysterious mechanism of action. PEMF is hypothesized to directly stimulate cellular repair, and not for nothing: it seems to really do that, and the effect is almost magical, speeding up bone fracture healing, and even restoring it in cases where healing has failed completely.
Your access to the NCBI website at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov has been temporarily blocked due to a possible misuse/abuse situation involving your site. This is not an indication of a security issue such as a virus or attack. It could be something as simple as a run away script or learning how to better use E-utilities, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK25497/, for more efficient work such that your work does not impact the ability of other researchers to also use our site. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, with other less commonly used interventions, was not included in this list, and its evidence for efficacy was therefore not assessed. However, as emphasised by Dr Pfeiffer, an evidence based evaluation of all other interventions would be of interest and could be considered for inclusion in the next round of evidence based guidelines.
Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (PEMF) works by improving cellular function and health at the molecular level. PEMF improves health by addressing impaired chemistry and the function of cells. Science has proven that our bodies produce their own magnetic fields. Everything works within the body by electromagnetic exchange. Disruption of electromagnetic energy in cells can cause impaired cell metabolism.

Many PEMF mats come with other therapies programmed into the mat. If your mat has more than one therapy, try not to enable all the therapies at once. Instead, enable 1-2 therapies every 3 days (ex. With a top of the line 5 therapy mat ). Enabling therapies gradually will allow your body to adapt to the different waves passing through it, which will result in a more positive healing experience.

Separate Cochrane Systematic Reviews evaluating the benefits of electrotherapy modalities as well as assessing the value of manual therapy and exercise for rotator cuff disease have been performed (Page, Green, McBain, et al, 2016; Page, Green, Mrocki, et al, 2016). Modalities such as transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy are examples of the modalities potentially utilized in the electrotherapy evaluation. On the basis of low-quality evidence, therapeutic ultrasound may have short-term benefits for patients with calcific tendinitis, and LLLT may have short-term benefits in patients with rotator cuff disease. The review of the literature identified only 1 of 60 trials to be of high quality regarding manual therapy and exercise, and no benefit was noted.
Three years later, this concept was taken one step further when Georges Lakhovsky shared his ideology and theories that the reinforcement of cell oscillation with radio waves increased their ability to fight off damage or disease. It did this by making them stronger and more resilient, Lakhovsky ascertained. Over the course of the next several decades, many researchers—Royal Raymond Rife, Antoine Priore, Robert Becker, and Abraham Liboff, to name a few—would each identify and research various pieces of information which, together helped create PEMF as we know it today.

Our alphabetised-by-disorder Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy Research Index contains more than a thousand peer-reviewed pulsed electromagnetic field therapy citations to aid you in your PEMF therapy research. If you notice something missing, just drop us a message through our chat function lower right. We’ll search the scientific literature and let you know what we think.
