The OMI pulse pad is also available, and has been helpful for those who suffer from carpal tunnel or other localized areas that are painful. The pulse pad can be easily placed on a table or on your lap, allowing you to rest your arm gently on the pulse pad. The pulse pad is compact and battery operated, making it easy to take your therapy wherever you choose to go.
Since the beginning of human civilization, magnetic fields have been used for pain relief and to promote healing. However a breakthrough came through a study in the 1940s that gathered that the permeability of cell membranes was directly affected by pulsed magnetic fields. The transmission of electrical impulses via cell membranes results in the generation of the body’s magnetic field which also has a pulse or a frequency.
Corticosteroid injections have been commonly utilized in treating rotator cuff disease. Koester et al (2007) performed a systematic review of the literature and analyzed nine randomized controlled studies comparing subacromial corticosteroid injection with placebo. One study demonstrated significant pain relief and two studies showed an increased range of motion in the injection group. No significant complications were identified. In a study comparing a corticosteroid injection with a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection for subacromial impingement syndrome, the investigators found the Constant score and VAS for pain to be significantly better at both 6 weeks and 6 months in the corticosteroid-treated group. Good patient candidates for a single subacromial corticosteroid injection to achieve pain control are those with significant night pain or patients who will not tolerate phase 1 rehabilitation because of pain.
Martin grew up working with his father, Maurice Bales, at Bales Scientific, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of medical devices. Maurice’s first two machines were infrared cameras — the same model that Martin uses in his practice today. His father’s second invention and popular medical device was the Photonic Stimulator — the machine used for photon therapy.Martin decided he liked working with patients, so he decided to study Traditional Chinese Medicine — acupuncture, Chinese herbology, and other modalities.Over the course of Pacific College’s 4-year master’s program, Martin studied the effects of photon therapy in combination with acupuncture for pain management. He was very impressed with the results and now offers this innovative combination therapy at the Center for New Medicine.Dr. Bales has worked extensively with cancer patients, starting with a 1 year internship on the Oncology floor of Rady Children’s hospital in San Diego. At Center For New Medicine and Cancer Center for Healing, Dr. Bales runs the Photon, Class IV Laser, PEMF, and Acupuncture therapies for Cancer patients. These therapies provide both primary and adjunctive-focused treatments to address increasing bioavailability of Hyperbaric Oxygen and IV therapies and providing non-invasive pain management when needed.
PEMF is clearly kin to TENS, part of the electrotherapy family. And yet it’s a different beast, much more exotic, with a more mysterious mechanism of action. PEMF is hypothesized to directly stimulate cellular repair, and not for nothing: it seems to really do that, and the effect is almost magical, speeding up bone fracture healing, and even restoring it in cases where healing has failed completely.
PEMF therapy is aimed at recharging depleted cells to stimulate healing of ailments and increase your overall state of wellness. PEMF therapy has already been FDA approved to fuse bones and has been cleared to reduce swelling and joint pain with certain devices. It is being used by countless Olympic teams and sports trainers for its pain relief and rapid recovery attributes.
Changes in blood pressure, skin electrical resistance, and pulse amplitude in 163 oncology patients exposed to tumor-specific PEMF frequencies have also been reported suggesting that PEMF therapy does not only target neoplastic cells, but may also have systemic effects. However, long-term PEMF treatment has been shown to be non-toxic, and employs 100,000 times lower frequencies as compared with radiofrequency ablation that is also employed for treatment of many cancers.
The Earthpulse™ PEMF generator is small and portable, yet stronger than all but the large and non-portable $10,000+ pulsed electromagnetic field therapy device systems. Strong enough to effectively penetrate a 16 – 18 inch (40 – 45 cm) thick mattress. A steep enough electromagnetic pulse to induce microampere current in tissue, yet small enough to easily fit in a handbag or briefcase; at a fraction of the cost of low-energy mat based pulsed electromagnetic field therapy device systems.
Effect of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, configured for the calcium/calmodulin pathway, on (A) a cutaneous full-thickness wound and (B) a transected Achilles' tendon healing in the rat. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy treatment was administered for 30 minutes twice daily for 21 days. The results showed a 59% increase in the tensile strength of the treated wound and a 69% increase in the tensile strength of the tendon. (Courtesy Strauch et al.49,50)
Successful studies typically use frequencies between 1-100 hz and with some very specific applications up to 1000 Hz have been used. Our Earth's natural environment and occurring magnetic field's though is what we humans have evolved with and we require. This is the best indicator of suitable PEMF frequency to bring back the body into it's natural state. The primary Schumann resonance would have the most effect although the other resonance points would also have an effect.
Stationary (or “static”), non-varying, magnetic fields from magnets have fixed strengths. They are used in mattresses, bracelets, knee wraps and the like. Most have very shallow penetration into the body, resulting in a very limited ability to affect deeper tissues, and they rarely treat all the cells of the body simultaneously. Only skilled practitioners may guide you to get the bestresults from these approaches.
RESULTS: Sixty-six patients were included, and 60 completed the study. After 1 month, PEMF induced a significant reduction in VAS pain and WOMAC scores compared with placebo. Additionally, pain tolerance, as expressed by PPT changes, and physical health improved in PEMF-treated patients. A mean treatment effect of -0.73 (95% CI - 1.24 to - 0.19) was seen in VAS score, while the effect size was -0.34 (95% CI - 0.85 to 0.17) for WOMAC score. Twenty-six per cent of patients in the PEMF group stopped NSAID/analgesic therapy. No adverse events were detected.
The development of modern PEMF has followed two separate pathways. The first pathway originated in more conventional (and still useful) electromagnetic field technologies broadly known as radio frequency (RF) diathermy.4 Continuous RF produces heat, the therapeutic component frequently employed in physical therapy. One early user of diathermy suspected that it could produce a nonthermal biologic effect.5 To test this idea clinically, the RF signal was intermittently pulsed, thereby eliminating heat. Positive outcomes, especially in treating inflammatory conditions, were reported.5 The first therapeutic RF PEMF device, the Diapulse, was commercialized in 19506 and was eventually cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the postoperative treatment of pain and edema in soft tissue. Clinical devices in use since that time typically have consisted of a large signal generator and a bulky coil applicator positioned over the area of injury that delivers therapy noninvasively, through either dressings or clothing. Early devices were expensive, nonportable, and produced significant electromagnetic interference (EMI); these factors restricted more widespread use in outpatient and home settings.
